QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE STARTING A DIY PROJECT

SEPTEMBER 25, 2021

👋 Starting a DIY project is as exciting as it can be. However, DIY projects often aren’t as simple as they are made out to be. Chances are, they could even end up costing you more than you intended to save.

Before starting a DIY project, you may want to reassess if you’re cut out for the job and ask yourself these questions:

ARE YOU PATIENT?

Patience is essential when you are building anything. Assess if you are easily frustrated or whether you are one who takes time to look at the plans and read directions. If you are a person who usually throws a manual away when you have barely started reading it, you might want to save yourself the headache of building your deck by hiring a pro. On the other hand, if you like the idea of a challenge and enjoy being a do-it-yourselfer, then building your own item could be a rewarding experience for you.

WILL YOU BE ABLE TO PERFORM THE TASKS?

Seeing things on video makes it all look so easy. In 3 minutes, you can make a widget. In 5 minutes, you can make a double-sided one. But do you need specific tools, specific skills? Are you strong enough to do the tasks? Do you need special protection, magnified eye-sight, superb balancing, or maybe the ability to be bent or be hunched over for a long period of time? The steps in the project may be easy to follow, but if you can’t easily perform them, the project should be scrapped.

WHAT TOOL AND EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?

The first consideration on your list should be whether you have the right equipment in your toolkit to enable you to carry out your project efficiently and to a high standard. For instance, most DIY projects will need you to own a saw, a screwdriver, a hammer, a wrench, and a utility knife. You should also consider buying any specialist tools that suit the needs of your project. It would help if you also considered whether you want to buy or rent this equipment, which may depend on the size and time commitments of your project.

DO YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR PROJECT?

Before you carry out DIY, it is vital that you have a plan that can provide solutions to some of the most common DIY issues. This can prevent you from getting a nasty surprise later in the process. Your plan should include easy-to-follow instructions on how to carry out your project, and you should make sure that you understand these before starting your project. Your plan should also include the cost of your project and the time that it will take to complete it. This will enable you to make sure that you can afford this and that you will set aside enough time to be able to complete the project.

HOW BIG IS THE PROJECT?

Your DIY project can be anything – from painting a wall to a full-blown kitchen remodel or a home renovation. Either way, you’ll want to prepare yourself for the complexity of it. Read through the instructions, making sure you understand the scope. If you are unclear about the details and find yourself with too many questions at the end of the instruction plan, you may want to switch to a different project.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST YOU?

List the prices for all the materials you need, including nails and screws, paint, cement, etc... and whatever other little incidentals the job might require. It is suggested that you then add about 10% to that cost for everything that you might run out of or might have forgotten. This should give you a pretty good idea of the real cost of your DIY project.

HOW MUCH ARE YOU REALLY SAVING?

You will want to calculate this not just in terms of money but the time and effort you’ll be putting in. Some jobs will most indefinitely also require purchasing equipment and if you don’t see yourself using these again, the smarter decision would be to hire someone to do the job instead or to buy the item you try to make.

DO YOU HAVE THE SPACE TO DO THE PROJECT?

Some DIY projects require a large space for things to be assembled, to dry, or even to lay out all the components. Make sure you have a location where you can do the project without having to accommodate other things that are going on. If you are using your kitchen, will you be able to make your meals and not disturb your project? Trying to build something in a confined space may be extremely challenging and impact your ability to do it properly.

WILL YOU BE OKAY WITH A ‘WONKY’
LOOKING FINISHED ITEM?

Once you are finished with the project, you could end up with an item that isn’t perfect. This is a serious consideration that shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you end up heading to the Mall to buy the item, the DIY project was not successful. If you are a perfectionist, or only like quality, you need to be truthful when you answer this question.

DOES IT BRING YOU JOY?

Finally, is this going to make you happy? Taking on a project yourself is great, and it should leave you feeling proud of yourself. If you don’t think it will spark joy, you may want to reconsider and go directly to the mall!
