How can my hobby become a full time job? - Testimonial

April 12,2021

My name is Joel Bailey and I would like to share with you my experience in woodworking and the reasons I became my own boss

About ten years ago, I started my first woodworking project, since then, woodworking has become my life. In those past years, I feel my woodworking has become better in every way.

To be honest, at the beginning, I didn't know anything about woodworking or power tools. In fact, I didn’t even know how to use a drill and the thought of power tools and woodworking definitely sounded kind of intimidating.

I’m so glad that I stuck at it, though, as it led me to discovering one of my greatest passions! 🛠

"To be honest, at the beginning, I didn't know anything about woodworking or power tools"

My whole life, I’ve loved to be creative and make things. Once I got older though, creativity and anything art related really got pushed aside for a more serious career path. After graduating, I taught for 5 years but I wasn’t truly happy. I decided to quit my job and take some time to think about another career.

One day while I was sitting on my couch I heard a noise coming from my kitchen. My table had just broke! This was when my neighbor helped change my life!

At this point of my life I didn't have a lot of money to spend on a new kitchen table but I was fortunate to have a neighbor that loved woodworking! He helped me to build my first table that's still our kitchen table today

After learning how to build tables, I was hooked and started making things so I decided to buy my own equipment and put it in my garage. Eventually, I started designing my own custom furniture based on what we needed at home...

After building tables, building other things and using tools became much easier. I spent hours researching, learning, and testing out different building methods. I learned how to use power tools by watching YouTube videos. I also learned all about different types of wood, where to buy lumber, varnish, and how to protect wooden surfaces. As many of my friends wanted to buy my products, I started to sell shelves on Facebook and Kijiji

It was initially just a test, but they were so popular that my business took off shortly after I put them online. After the success on Facebook and Kijiji I decided to sell my work on an even bigger platform.

Etsy has been the main platform since starting up, although I set up a website to diversify sales channels. After launch, I was skeptical about selling large items online, but I was dead wrong

The business outgrew the basement within 7 months and we're now happily settled in separate shop and garage, meaning there’s some room to grow and space to begin stocking up on items for the Black Friday and Christmas rushes!

It really wasn’t where I had ever expected to end up, but I’m so glad I did it! I hope my story encourages you to try it if you’re interested in learning woodworking, something DIY, or any other skill!
